Reading Marathon

A Reading Marathon is a tradition in my class! Every June, we have an entire day dedicated to reading! Obviously, we're preparing for this day long event all year because you can't just up and decide to run a marathon!

So, on the day of the Reading Marathon, we can wear pajamas and comfy clothes. We can take off our shoes or wear slippers. Kiddos come into the classroom in the morning and their morning work is to make sure they have a stack of books ready. Every kid must have 3 chapter books and they may have up to 10 picture books. I also make a brochure on Microsoft Publisher with "Checkpoints." Every half hour we stop and complete a section of the brochure. I change it up every year, depending on the class. Sometimes it's a visualizing question, summarizing, word work, etc. After completing the section, they can share with a neighbor. Then, it's back to reading!

I hand out water bottles with a label I make saying, "Reading Maration 2014," and we have a lot of fun with it! Of course there are kiddos who are not on task all day, but for the most part, they really are.

...even if they don't enjoy having their pictures taken, they like reading. I promise!
